2011 is the FOURTH year of programs in drawing and painting at the DRAWING THE ENVIRONMENT STUDIO in Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine, New Jersey.

The next 2011 - 2012 workshops will be:

December 17, 18, 19, 20 January 5 - 10 January 15 - 20 January 25 - 30
The Workshops are limited to 6 participants, 3 places are open.
Time: 2 - 5 p.m.

Workshops in drawing and painting- landscape art and the arts of perception are designed for small groups interested in surveys of world art related to the use of landscape imagery from ancient times to early modernism to the art of today.

Groups are being formed from area museums and schools and for day long retreats in the site and studio workshop.

In FEBRUARY 2010 the "LIMINAL SUBLIMINAL" ADVANCED PAINTING WORKSHOP
was held at the National Academy in which

HISTORY OF THE DRAWING THE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM

The DRAWING THE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM was created in 2006 to preserve historic buildings on public lands by placing small, independent art schools within them. The 800 square foot loft in a 1919 stable was renovated in 2009 to provide higher education programs in art and design on public land: In this case, in the Hudson River Palisades Interstate Park, in Alpine NJ.

Partner Institutions may create programs for the study of drawing in its broadest sense.
Themes to date are: SEMIOTICS OF LANDSCAPE, STUDIES IN NATURE, ART, AND SOCIETY, DRAWING AND MODERNIZATION,
PERSPECTIVE AS A PHILOSOPHICAL PROJECT AND VISUAL LITERACY.
The DRAWING THE ENVIRONMENT STUDIO provides a drawing workshop retreat in a dramatic natural setting on the Hudson River Palisades. Parnter institutions, their faculty and students are invited to design programs of study based on their drawing collections and education programs.

2009 PROGRAMS DRAWING THE ENVIRONMENT

Historic sites within the Palisades Interstate Park have provide "drawing theaters" such as this coastal ruins of the early twentieth century dancehall, on a grassy plain of the Park just north of Englewood Boat Basin. The Hudson River flows by immediately in front of this ruins. Here students compose sketches to be used in panorama drawings.
